Easy Burlap Placemats

Seriously....these placemats were so easy to make! If you can sew a straight line, you can make these. I was inspired to do my spring table last year by Thrifty Decor Chick's awesome table.  Here is how my table ended up looking.....

Here is what I did:

I used a different placemat to measure and cut my burlap and a lining layer.

I used brown velvet ribbon that I got at Hobby Lobby (half off, of course), folded it in half and ironed it down.

Then I just slid the burlap and liner layer in between the folded ribbon, pinned it down and sewed each side.

And I ironed the finished placemat one last time.

And these made a great back drop for my little Dollar Tree birds in bowls!

So what do you think?  This would be an easy beginner project for anyone who wants to try their hand at sewing!

I am linking my placemats here:

How precious! I will be doing this! This color scheme will be perfect in our dining room. I just hope the Dollar Tree here has those birds!

Love those!! I am here visiting from Kim at My Domestic Bliss. I saw your bath redo and though you would like to see mine. We used some of the same tile, I think. Here is a link to my before and after post. Nice to meet you!

I love this idea - was in Dollar Tree yesterday and did not see the birds at all - what section did you get them from?

What is in the middle of your table? A tray, a cabinet door painted? And it looks like you have moss down the center of the tray. Give some tips about how you put that together. I have a very large table and I am thinking about putting a similar arrangement together and love the look you got.

Lynn-
I got the birds last year at Dollar Tree. They were just right inside the door where all the tacky little glass/ceramic pieces are. Hopefully you can find something similar. I saw a post today where a blogger showed a little bit different bird that she got from a dollar store, but she didn't specify which one. I spray painted my birds with Heirloom White, so when you look, keep in mind that spray paint can make them what you want. The tray in the middle is actually a mirror! I just took off the hanging hardware and put felt pads on the back so it wouldn't scratch the table. I bought sheet moss at Joann's and just cut it to fit. It was in the section where the little bird nests were...sort of expensive, so take a coupon. Have fun with it, and I would love to see your table when you finish it! :o}
